Regular Deashing will Extend the Life of your Grate & Fire Bars! (or reduce if you don’t!)
How to Extend Fire Bar Life. This also relates to your fire’s grate.
Your Grate or Fire bar can burn out in no time if you do not regularly deash your fire after use (or on a daily basis). Read our guide to help extend fire bar life, and also the life of your fire’s grate where fitted.
Leaving ash to build up daily chokes the air supply, creating an intense “hot zone” right beneath the grate and fire bars. This heat acts like a blacksmith’s forge, where trapped temperatures cause the cast iron to overheat, melt, and warp. While a forge is an extreme example, this localized heat spike similarly destroys the lifespan of your stove’s grate.
How to extend fire bar life is not just about deashing and emptying the ashbox regularly. Make sure that the ashes do NOT touch the underneath of the grate / bars. You need to make sure that ALL areas of the bars are free of ash and airflow can pass underneath the bars. Ash should be cleaned from the back and front edges and corners of the fire / bars / grate. This also allows the bars to move / expand freely and ensures the riddle action for deashing works smoothly and unrestrictedly and so extend the life of your grate or fire bars.
Keeping the Fire regularly ‘deashed’ will increase it’s parts life several fold.
A symptom of Grate Bars being over stressed by the appliance NOT being de-ashed regularly (or correctly) is that they will bend ‘upwards’. If your bars have bent ‘downwards’ then this is just normal usage / wear.
