Small cracks, such as hairline cracks, are usually fine, but if the Fire Bricks start crumbling or you can see the metal behind them, it’s time to replace them for safety!
You should expect to replace your fire bricks every 2 to 5 years. Replace them sooner if they can no longer protect the stove or are broken.
When to Replace Your Fire Bricks (Signs of Failure)
We recommend that you change a fire brick immediately if you notice:
- Exposed Metal: If you notice a crack or gap in the brick large enough that you can see the metal casing through. (usually over 4mm)
- Crumbling or Chipping: If your fire brick is crumbling, peeling, or badly chipped.
- Instability: If the brick is loose, collapsed, or no longer provides stable support for the internal baffle plate.
- Significant Thinning: If the bricks have significantly worn down.
Broken Baffle Brick: You should always replace a broken baffle brick immediately, as it’s essential for your stove’s safety and heat efficiency
When You Can Wait (Normal Wear)
You do not usually need to replace fire bricks for:
- Hairline Cracks: Note that hairline cracks are common due to expansion. If the brick is seated firmly against the wall, it remains safe and effective.
- Discolouration: A pink or reddish tint usually means the stove is running too hot, but you don’t need to replace the fire brick unless it’s also starting to crumble.
