HOW TO MEASURE YOUR EXISTING OPENING: 16 & 18 Inch refers to the fire width opening. Measure the Front Fret (Fire Front), the metal piece that sits across the opening of the fire between the Hearth and the Grate.  This listing will create a 16" or 18" fire opening. The 2" difference depends how you fit the rear bricks.  Call us if you need more information 01827 713322.  Click the small picture icon to see brick sizes.

Side Cheeks Function:

The Baxi Side (Left / Right) & Back (Top & Bottom) Bricks assist in reflecting the heat into the room. If a Fire Brick is cracked or damaged it is recommended that it is replaced or repaired otherwise it will quickly disintegrate. Some Baxi underfloor draught fires are installed with domestic output back boilers, if so, they do not have back firebricks, if installed with a high output radiator heating boiler then they do not have side fire cheeks or back bricks. Contact us if you require help.

Jargon Buster:

The Bricks are mostly known as 'Fire Bricks' or 'Back Fire Bricks'

Other Related Useful Products:

We also stock the Fire Cement that will be required when changing your Firebricks - see other listings or contact us.

Fitting Instructions from an INSTALLERS point of view

The below has been created by an INSTALLER, Who has provided his account of how to fix the bricks. If the bricks are not fiited correctly, they may crack. Please always ensure a proffessionally registered HETAS installer fits or signs off any DIY work.

+++++++++++++++++++++

Before you start it’s a good idea to take photos of the installation as it is, just as a reminder.

Remove old bricks and about 2” of the surrounding infill material, to allow you space to manoeuvre the new bricks.

Clean off the top basket (the frame where the bricks sit), fit the bottom back brick and the 2 side bricks, ensuring you can still remove the grate and ash pan ( they interlock using the bullnose on the back of the side bricks and the grooves in the bottom back brick). Fit dry with no jointing material.

Around the back of the back brick and side bricks insert a layer (or 2) of corrugated card board, against the brick. Between the cardboard and the surrounding chamber, infill with vermiculite concrete (6 parts vermiculite to 1 part cement, with just enough water so it holds together when a handful is squeezed) Pack the space up to the top of all 3 bricks, leaving no spaces. Make sure you have a 10-15mm gap at the front edge of the side bricks, where they butt up to the back of the fireplace, to enable the expansion joint to be fitted later, once set.

Here comes the tricky bit!

You may have to remove some more of the surrounding infill material to the sides above where the top back brick fits, as the top brick fits on top of the bottom brick and behind the side bricks, you have to feed the top brick into space on one side to be able to push it through the gap. Once through it needs pulling back so it is equi-distanced behind the 2 side bricks, now it is in the correct position it should lie flat against the slope on the side bricks.

As before you will need to insert a layer of corrugated cardboard behind the top brick, and the vermiculite infill material, to within about ½” of the top of the space. The remaining space can be filled with a very weak mix of sand & cement 10:1, to smooth off the pargetting (the slope running about 45deg into the base of the chimney) this mix can also be used to fill any gaps above the bricks that may have become disturbed.

*It is a good idea to try all the bricks in position dry first, before using the infill material to ensure you have knocked out enough space to manoeuvre the bricks as you don’t really want to be knocking out more rubble when you are half way through the job!

Once set (24-48 Hours) insert the rope expansion joint to the front edge of the side bricks, use a rope that is a larger diameter than the gap so it can be caulked into the space. Do not be tempted to point up any joints with cement or fire cement as the dry joints will act as another expansion joint and allow the bricks to move.
